Legislative Advocacy

CAI-CLAC serves as the legislative advocacy arm for the eight state chapters of the Community Associations Institute, a membership organization providing information, education and resources to homeowner volunteers who govern communities and the professionals who support them in 63 chapters worldwide.

Each year, CAI-CLAC sponsors bills that will significantly enhance the lives of those living and working in any of California’s 50,000 common interest developments. This past year, for example, CAI-CLAC sponsored Assembly Bill 1412, which was authored by Assemblyman Steven Choi (R – Irvine) and signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown, that expanded liability protection for directors in mixed-use communities.

CAI-CLAC volunteers work closely with Advocate Louie Brown to monitor legislation throughout each session, maintaining communications with legislators and Capitol staff to ensure CAI-CLAC input is considered. It then educates and rallies its members in support of pro-community association bills and in opposition to legislation that may pose negative impacts.
