Members of the CAI San Diego Legislative Support Committee accepted the challenge made by CLAC Legislative Advocate, Louie Brown, to meet with Legislators during the summer recess.
LSC members Nathan Cornett and Lara Kwiatkowski acted on a very short notice and accepted a meeting with Assembly Member Randy Voepel (71st District) to discuss concerns with SB 323 (Wieckowski), which would eliminate local government over elections and candidate qualifications. The meeting was very productive and the Assembly Member offered to help talk with other legislators about his concerns with the bill.
Prior to this meeting, LSC Members Kieran Purcell and John MacDowell, met with the District Director for Assembly Member Tasha Boerner-Horvath (76th District). Boerner-Horvath is the author of AB 1731, dealing with short terms rentals, a bill supported by CAI-CLAC. The meeting provided an opportunity to express CAI-CLAC’s appreciation for the Assembly Member tackling the issue of short-term rentals and allowed Purcell and MacDowell to explain concerns SB 323 would create for the associations in the 76th district.
The SD LSC is also planning a local lobby day to meet with additional Assembly Members prior to the end of the summer recess.
We’re asking all CAI Chapter members and volunteer partners to use this time to schedule in-district meetings with your Assembly Members. Meeting with your legislator allows you to be a resource and educate staff about the total number of their constituents living in community associations and the current bills impacting residents.
CAI-CLAC has additional materials available to help you and your Chapter members prepare. Visit What to Expect When Visiting Your Legislator and What to Take to Your Legislator’s Office for more information. Please stay tune for additional call-to-actions in August once the legislature has reconvened.
