New Legislation Effective January 1, 2019
Through the grass-roots efforts of the Community Association Institute’s California Legislative Action Committee (CAI-CLAC), Governor Brown vetoed two bills that would have imposed unnecessary burdens on California’s community associations. We also had other successes in the 2018 legislature in educating legislators and their staffs about common interest developments and the impact of new laws.

Tips for an Effective Meeting with Your Legislator
Each year, the Community Association Institute’s California Legislative Action Committee (CAI-CLAC) sponsors bills that will significantly enhance the lives of those living and working in California’s 50,000 common interest developments. Another important component of CAI-CLAC is ongoing education for legislators on erroneous and harmful legislation in order to protect the integrity of community associations. This is an ongoing process that requires time and people building relationships at the local level. CAI-CLAC Chapter members can help improve communication with local officials by meeting with their legislators and becoming a go-to resource for community associations. Here’s how.
CAI-CLAC Annual Planning Meeting Wrap Up
The CAI-CLAC Annual Planning Meeting (APM) brought together 56 CAI-CLAC Delegates, Liaisons, At-Large Delegates, Emeritus Members, as well as Chapter CED and LSC members from throughout California to discuss key issues facing community associations and our legislative priorities for 2019. Our APM is critical to provide updates on important legal requirements that impact how Community Associations work and key legal developments that impact our residents.
CAI-CLAC 2018 Legislative Accomplishments
In 2018, CAI-CLAC worked tirelessly to serve the best interests of approximately 13,000,000 homeowners residing in over 50,000 community associations throughout California. There were several laws introduced this year that directly impacted our community associations. We were successful in persuading the Governor to veto two bills that would have dramatically changed community association governance, and removed associations from a bill which would have imposed onerous and unnecessary inspection requirements. We are proud of the work conducted by our Sacramento Advocate, delegates and liaisons and their outstanding legislative accomplishments achieved.

CAI-CLAC 2018 Legislative Day at the Capitol Recap

I attended the CAI/CLAC Legislative Day in Sacramento over the weekend. The experience, education and information was invaluable. Sessions began on Sunday through part of Monday. There are more than 33,000 CAI members and over 60 chapters worldwide.
